Sea Salt Brownies

A truly classic brownie. Rich, deeply chocolatey, and perfectly balanced with a touch of sea salt—this is the one we reach for when only the classic will do.

Forage Baker's Notes

Flour matters. Gluten-free flours (and even wheat flours) can vary widely in weight from cup to cup, so we strongly recommend using a kitchen scale for the most consistent results. If you don’t yet own a scale, gently scoop Heritage Baker’s Flour Blend into a measuring cup and level with a knife. This method yields approximately 125g per cup.


  • Packing the cup will result in too much flour and a denser brownie.

  • Spoon-and-sweep methods may under-measure and affect structure.

Sweeteners matter too. Sweeteners vary just as much and will impact both texture and moisture. For best results, we recommend Homestead Sweetener or traditional sugar.

While substitutions are possible, results may vary—some alternative sweeteners can make brownies overly soft, dry, or crumbly.


  • Homestead Sweetener:1 cup = 140g (1:1 replacement for sugar by volume)

  • Granulated sugar:1 cup = 200g

Recipe

Makes: 9–12 brownies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons Heritage Baker’s Flour (110g)

  • 1¾ cups Homestead Sweetener (245g)

  • ½ cup cocoa powder (50g)

  • 1½ sticks (¾ cup) unsalted butter, melted (168g)

  • 3 large eggs (150g)

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • A generous pinch of sea salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line or generously butter an 8" or 9" square pan.

  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and sweetener. Set aside.

  3. In a medium bowl, whisk the melted butter and cocoa powder until smooth.

  4. Whisk in the eggs, vanilla, and sea salt.

  5. Add the flour mixture and whisk until a smooth, glossy batter forms.

  6. Spread evenly into the prepared pan.

  7. Bake on the center rack for 26–30 minutes.

    • Brownies should be set and dry at the edges, with a slightly soft center.

    • For an extra-gooey interior, remove a few minutes early.

  8. Cool completely before slicing.
